The first 2 years of Miley's life was filled with constant trips to the ER, hospital stays, antibiotics, steroids and countless doctors. During Christmas of 2010, Miley entered the kitchen as we were mixing up a large batch of peanut-butter cookies. Immediately her eyes started swelling and she began to have a hard time breathing. With a family history of anaphylactic reactions, we quickly recognized the signs & symptoms. We rushed her to the ER and ended up spending a couple days in the hospital with allergy tests underway.
Since then and her diagnosis of anaphylaxis, we are faced with a new set of challenges every day. Even though we take extreme precaution in every situation, prepare to the best of our abilities and home truly being Miley's only safe zone - we often miss that wrapper laying around or peanut butter smeared on the grocery cart. Although immune therapy has helped her a bit, we are always on guard.
Amidst Miley's allergies, we also nearly lost her due to other health complications when she was 4 years old. One morning we found her unresponsive and having seizures. After 7 days in ICU, she had a diagnosis of a Fatty Acid Oxidation disorder and hypoglycemia. Life changed again, diet changed again and more precautions had to be set in place.
The next year and half Miley went through numerous tests and we continued to trust and believe that God is at work in her life. Nine months ago she was cleared of the Fatty acid disorder (praise the Lord), but hypoglycemia and anaphylactic life continued.
Vinny will no doubt change Miley's world! We celebrate the possibilities that Vinny will broaden her ability to go new places, play at the park, visit a friends' house without the constant "helicopter" mom watching every move. Excitement builds in our hearts knowing the sense of freedom Vinny will add to our 6 year-olds curious mind and social life.
Vinny will not only be a new family member but he will be Miley's Angel and another step to never holding our daughter lifeless in our arms again.
