Sage is an Australian Labradoodle being trained to detect peanuts and tree nuts for Bili, a six year old girl who had her first reactions when she was just an infant. When Bili was still being breastfed, she would break out it hives all over her body, neither her parents nor the doctors couldn't figure out why. Her parents were told it was most likely just a reaction to the detergent.
By 18 months, Bili was no longer breast feeding and the hives had stopped. One morning her mother shared a tiny bit of my breakfast with her; eggs and whole wheat toast with peanut butter on it. Less than a minute later Bili's entire body was covered in hives, then she turned a shade of red and her nose began running. Upon Doctor's advice, Billi was taken to the ER. Ten minutes after arriving, her lips turned purple and her skin turned red. Bili was immediately given Epinephrine.
During her first allergist appointment she was diagnosed with a life threatening allergy to peanuts, and tree nuts. After that their lives became "Learn As You Go." Billi reacted to peanuts by touching residue or by breathing aerosolized particles. Her parents also learned she would react to small amounts of tree nuts in the products that "are processed in the same facility as tree nuts".
During a recent ballet class, Bili began having a hard time catching her breath, then her face began to swell. After verifying that none of her classmates had eaten peanuts, they searched the room to find a peanut by the garbage can. The family realized an Allergy Alert (tm) dog would have helped prevent this reaction.
Like with any child, her parents wish for their little girl to be able to play, participate, and enjoy everyday things without the constant worry of her food allergies and an anaphylactic reaction.
Raising funds for the training Sage for Bili means they would have another resource with the goal of keeping their daughter safe.
