Gia is a beautiful Golden Retriever being trained on tree nuts and peanuts. She has recently been matched with Carson and Benjamin, here in their story:
With two children Carson (age 6) and Benjamin (age 3) diagnosed with life-threatening allergies we are never more than arms length away from life saving medication. Carson was diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy to almonds. Then, at 18 months old, Benjamin was diagnosed with asthma, a dairy allergy, severe gluten intolerance and an anaphylactic allergy to peanuts and almonds. Benjamin's asthma complied with his life threatening allergies puts him at extremely high risk.
Since the first diagnosis our daily lives require emergency medicines in tow at all times. Going out to eat as a family has been severely restricted. We currently have two places that we trust. Trips to stores include avoiding aisles with peanuts, the bakery and other high risk areas. When we do get invited to birthday parties, it takes multiple conversations with the party planners to ensure there are no nut products to be consumed. As you can see, each part of our daily life needs to be mapped out cautiously. It brings a lot of stress an anxiety to precious young boys, who should be carefree.
For the first time these activities are within our reach with the help of an Allergy Alert™ dog from Angel Service Dogs™, Inc. (ASDi). Allergy Alert™ Dog Gia will add another “defense” against peanuts/almonds that we, as parents, can’t provide. Gia is being trained to sniff out peanuts/peanut oil and almonds/almond oil on items such as a shopping carts, bowling balls, movie theater seats, playgrounds, play areas and common places others would take for granted as being “safe.”
Your donations for Gia will be used for the training of Gia, allow Carson and Benjamin's family to travel to Colorado to meet Gia, and the family to have an intensive 10-day training. Any funds received in excess will go to ASDi™ and will be used for training other dogs for families in need. If for any reason Gia is not able to complete the rigorous training or medical requirements of Angel Service Dogs (tm), Inc. another dog will be chosen to meet the requirements Gia is being trained to fulfill.
